Noted For: actress; Gone With the Wind (1939), To Each His Own (1946), The Fifth Musketeer. Won Academy awards for To Each His Own (Best actress, 1947) and The Heiress (Best actress, 1950). Older sister of actress Joan Fontaine. Successfully sued Warner Brothers over their forcing her to make up time for which they suspended her. The resulting "de Havilland decision" required movie studios to treat their performers more equitably (1946).
